The Flying Bridge Event Venue in Washington DC

I recently had the chance to do a site visit at a unique venue in Washington, DC – the Flying Bridge. It’s a rooftop location with a stunning view of the Capitol, complete with an all-weather tent that makes it a viable option all year round.

The Flying Bridge is located on the roof (literally) of an office building a few blocks away from Union Station. You do have to use the same elevator banks as the rest of the office building to access the space – although they can work around the security procedures if your event is off-hours.

Once you get the proper floor, it’s a short walk through a hallway that’s clearly an office environment, then outside to the lower deck, or up the (covered) stairs to the main space. Once you’re there you are rewarded with an absolutely fantastic view:

The all-weather tent has a capacity of up to 200 for a seated dinner or 300 for a reception. The total capacity for the rooftop is 470. The tent is sturdy – I was told that it would take hurricane winds to force them to cancel an event (and let’s be honest – that would make you want to cancel your event as well). You have the option of raising the sides or even retracting the roof. It can be heated or air conditioned.

I attended an event there right after it opened in the winter. It was a miserable day – cold, rainy, windy. At that time the walkway from the stairs to the tent wasn’t completely covered (it is now) but it was pleasant once we got into the tent – although the winds were howling, I never felt unsafe.

The view is the main draw here – but it’s also a blank canvas of a space, it’s pretty much just wood so you can really make it your own with décor.

This is a great venue for weddings – I imagine it will become more popular especially as it gets more well-known.

The downside is that it’s in an office building – which is a little weird. There’s the chance that guests might get lost on their way to your event – so signage and greeters are a must. The restrooms (minus a single accessible one) are location a floor down and a bit of a walk away.

It’s also not exactly inexpensive. It’s pricing is in line with other special events venues in the DC area, especially ones that command such a gorgeous view. Some of the rentals are included with the price, I believe.

My photos don’t really do it justice as you need to see it set up for an event. If you want more information, definitely visit their website, where they have several event photos.

Have you been there yet? What did you think?
